The holidays are a great time to show family and friends you care with thoughtful, curated gifts. But life is hectic, and while you always have grand plans, we know how things go. Last-minute shopping tends to focus on just getting something, instead of finding a gift that’s truly personal.

Don’t be that person who becomes known for generic gifts (that usually end up at a White Elephant gift exchange). We can help. We’ve assembled a variety of home-grown inspiration for everyone on your gift list.

For the oenophile
El Dorado Passport: Give your wine-loving friend (and yourself) a unique El Dorado County wine country experience. Tickets to one of the 2017 El Dorado Passport Weekends (April 22-23; 29-30) show you care. Win extra points by surprising them with tickets to the Winemaker Dinner at Sienna Restaurant.

Wine clubs: With over 70 wineries in El Dorado County, there are plenty of choices for bottles, wine clubs, and other gifts. To learn more about the region’s award-winning wineries, start with wine associations including El Dorado Wine Country, Fair Play Wine Association, Carson Road Wine Association, Apple Hill Growers Association, and the new American River Wine & Ag Trail.

Stocking stuffers and hostess gifts
The talented blacksmiths at the Gold Bug Mine are hard at work during the holiday season. Besides demonstrating their artisan skills, they’re taking custom orders for bottle openers, BBQ utensils, trivets, dinner bells, courting candles, and other unique gifts handcrafted from horseshoes or railroad spikes.

For the cocktail (and history) aficionado
Dry Diggings Distillery: Named for the original name of Placerville that refers to the earliest style of (pre-Gold Rush) mining, this distillery has a distinctly Motherlode theme. Come for a distillery tour (Fridays at 12 pm and 4 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 12 pm and 3 pm; $10 per person) and tasting, and leave with a custom gift basket. Gift baskets include your choice of spices, sauces, bitters, cocktail ingredients, and most importantly, Dry Diggings spirits. Think Whiskey themed baskets, Bloody Mary baskets, or for the James Bond fan in your life, a Martini or Vesper themed basket.

For the skier or snowboarder
Gift the gift of snow with Sierra-at-Tahoe 3-PAK Lift Tickets. The 3-Pak is one lift ticket valid for one person good any three days of the 2016-17 season, including holiday dates.

For the crafter
The South Lake Tahoe based Wildwood DIY Boutique showcases a unique variety of local and independent artists, with many goods handcrafted in the Tahoe basin.  You’ll find more than gifts and treasures here, however, as Wildwood also offers the tools to do-it-yourself, through workshops, craft kits, books, and supplies. Gift certificates here are valid for workshops or anything in the boutique.
