James B. Hume

You have found the medallion for James B. Hume. Hume came to El Dorado County to seek gold but ended up becoming a well-respected and effective civic employee and law legend. As Undersheriff of El Dorado County in 1864, his investigation following the Billion Bend stagecoach robbery caught the attention of Wells Fargo Co. for his thorough and complete capture of all individuals involved.

Leaving Placerville in 1872, after two elected terms as Sheriff, Hume was quickly employed by Wells Fargo as Chief Special Officer of their new investigation department.  Employing his techniques, known today as forensic science, Hume advanced criminal investigation practices in California and the west far beyond the typical actions of the time.
