Miners on Main – Frederick Bee

Frederick Bee

You have found the medallion for Frederick Bee. When Fredrick Bee and his brother Albert arrived in Placerville in 1849, they constructed a pole and split shake store near where today’s bell tower stands.  California was connected to the rest of the world by ship or by foot at the time.

In 1858, Fredrick helped fund and promote the Placerville-Humboldt Telegraph Company. Affectionately known as “Bees Grapevine”, this first electronic means of communication connecting mining towns and camps across the Sierra Mountains was cutting edge technology, reducing the time it would take for communication exchange from days to instants.  He continued to help seek out all modes of information exchange and was a promoter of the Pony Express as well, although Placerville residents were alerted to the progress of the Pony Riders via “Bee’s Grapevine”.

To find the next miner from Frederick Bee’s medallion . . .

Cross the street at the News Company and continue on Main Street, toward Sacramento Street, searching near windows for the miner’s medallion. If you haven’t found it by the time you cross under the Rexall sign, then do some window shopping for glasses.
