Tis the season: three Apple Hill™ Christmas tree farms to visit

One of the best things to do in Apple Hill™ this time of year is to go Christmas tree hunting. Instead of buying your tree at a local lot, finding your Christmas tree becomes a family event. Families come from all over the Sacramento area armed with warm clothes and hot chocolate to find the perfect Christmas tree to bring home. With 16 different Christmas tree farms in the area, there are a lot of trees to choose from!

1) McGee’s Christmas Tree Farm

Why? Because they were voted the #1 tree farm in El Dorado County! Open for business since 1952, McGee’s is run by an incredible family. Not only do they have a huge selection with a 20-acre plantation, but this family truly cares about you finding the perfect tree. They also participate in eco-friendly harvesting. They nurture tree stumps that have any branches left throughout the year to make sure they have the best chance possible of becoming new trees

Types of trees available: Douglas Fir, White Fir, Canaan, Noble Fir, and Silvertip.

2) Indian Rock Christmas Tree Farm

Why? Because Indian Rock is run by an amazing family. Every Christmas season, they send out small Christmas trees to soldiers overseas who are from El Dorado County. The way they describe it? They want them “to have a little piece of home while they’re away.” To make the experience even better, their ranch is pet-friendly so your dogs can join in on the family tradition each year. Enjoy some of the hot cider and chili they sell while you browse through their 13-acre plantation, and when you’ve made your choice, take a photo. If you send it to Indian Rock, they will display it on their online photo album.

Types of trees available: Silvertip, Douglas Fir, White Fir, Pine, Incense Cedar, and Specialty Firs.

3) Hillside Tree Farm

Why? Because if you purchase a tree, you get a free train ride on the kiddie train and free apple cider. Note: the train does not run if the tracks are wet for safety reasons so do not go in the rain. There is also a picnic area as well as pony rides available so this is a great place to bring small children. If you don’t want to cut down your own tree, they will step in and cut it down for you. This is a very nice gesture considering some of their largest trees are up to 16 feet tall! They also include a free service that uses a special machine to shake off old needles so your tree is nice and clean when you take it home.

Types of trees available: Nordman Fir, Noble Fir, Swift Silver, Silvertip, Fraser Fir, and White Fir.

Whether you’re in it to help the environment, help support our troops, or just get an awesome train ride, you are bound to build an unforgettable family memory in Apple Hill. We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
