Apple Hill Cake | El Dorado County

Apple Hill℠ Cake recipe: an El Dorado County tradition

Fall is prime time to explore the ranches, wineries, and other places that are part of the Apple Hill™ Growers. It’s when you can indulge in all things apple, including donuts, pie, turnovers, cider, candied apples… and Apple Hill Cake!

A longtime tradition, Apple Hill℠ Cake is at its best when made with apples picked in Apple Hill℠, though any apple can be used in the recipe.

This recipe (along with many others!) is featured in the Apple Hill℠ Cookbook, which you can purchase online or at select ranches. If you’re heading to Apple Hill℠ this season, be sure to download the app before you head out, as it features updated information on every ranch plus area food, lodging, events, activities, and much more.

2 cups sugar
1⁄2 cup oil
2 eggs
4 cups diced apples
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 1⁄2 cups chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9”x13” pan. Combine sugar, oil, and eggs in a large bowl, stirring until well mixed. Stir in diced apples and nuts.  Sift together flour, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt, then add to bowl.

Stir all ingredients together to form a batter (do not overmix). Pour into pan. Bake one hour, or until golden and cake is set.
